CITY OF BONES BY CASSANDRA CLARE

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS
VOL 1

Back Cover :
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing—not even a smear of blood—to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy ? This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons.

It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Summary:
One night in a club with Simon, her best friend, Clary is witnessing a murder committed by three teenagers. But is this really happened if no one seems able to see the body or the murderers ? Her nightmare is amplified when the next day, Clary is attacked by a demon and her mother kidnapped. Clary only hope of saving her and learn the truth about her origin lies in the assistance provided by Jace, one of the killers crossed the day before. Dive into a world populated by vampires, fairies, werewolves and demon hunters, will Clary be able to survive and defend herself in an hostile environment filled with incredible danger?

Reactions:
Reading the various blogs, I had a choice to make between "Hunger Games" or "The mortal instruments" as the two most successful promising series to read. I loved the trilogy by Suzanne Collins and I confess not to have been so excited about "City of Bones." In my opinion, the ingredients are present but the sauce just to take forever to be ready.

Cassandra Clare manages to create a convincing world full of demons and you are captived by her wonderful imagination. She describes her universe in a very beautiful way and she makes us take pleasure in reading her book. However, despite a steady pace of attacks, twists, I stayed on my end because of the characters.

I found Clary below her potential. She is still waiting to be rescued and did not defend herself at all. Cute at the beginning but a little irritating in the long run.
As for Jace, he is interesting in his bothered hero role, over confident and with a caustic humor. But the kissing scene is a bit disappointing and his Don Juan role takes a beating.
Simon Hodge and Luke are the supporting characters who have most affected me while Alex and Isabelle irritated me by their "spoiled children" act.

Although I spent a pleasant time reading and I will continue with "City of Ashes," I expect to be caught off guard, to be surprised by the result of this trilogy.
Otherwise, I'd definitely be part of the team "Hunger Games"!

Sentences
From Jace: « And next time you're planning to injure yourself to get my attention, just remember that little sweet talk works wonders. »

- « I'm not really in the mood right now. »
- « That's got to be the first time a girl's ever said that to me. »Jace mused.
- « Stick with me and it won't be the last. »
