LEAVING PARADISE BY SIMONE ELKELES

Back Cover:
Nothing has been the same since Caleb Becker left a party drunk, got behind the wheel, and hit Maggie Armstrong. Even after months of painful physical therapy, Maggie walks with a limp. Her social life is nil and a scholarship to study abroad—her chance to escape everyone and their pitying stares—has been canceled.
After a year in juvenile jail, Caleb’s free . . . if freedom means endless nagging from a transition coach and the prying eyes of the entire town. Coming home should feel good, but his family and ex-girlfriend seem like strangers.
Caleb and Maggie are outsiders, pigeon-holed as "criminal" and "freak." Then the truth emerges about what really happened the night of the accident and, once again, everything changes. It’s a bleak and tortuous journey for Caleb and Maggie, yet they end up finding comfort and strength from a surprising source: each other.

Summary:
Caleb spent a year in jail after he has hit Maggie while he was driving drunk . He comes back and has to face the changes that has occured during his absence. To also face the judgemental stare of his relatives, friends and the town people. Maggie has just spent a year to undergo surgeries and rehabilitation to one day hope to walk properly. Hidden behind her wounds, bitter and defeatist, shehas yet to face the return of Caleb. Awkward situations, unexpected events will cloud the horizon and the two teenagers will have to learn to overcome them if they want to regain normalcy in their lives. Will they succeed?

Impressions:
I found this story very touching. Nothing is beautiful in the slip of a teenager who is driving drunk and destroys the life of a young girl by his irresponsibility. The story could have ended much worse, but even if the author reduces the consequences of his wrongdoing, she speaks of an existing reality: Young people and alcohol.
The difficulty of dealing with the reprobating gaze of others equally difficult as you are the victim or the executioner. The difficulty of forgiveness. The ease in which life can change in a second based on bad or good decisions taken by the decider and their reflexion on his family, his city. The hope of change that drives people to improve despite the difficulty, the trials. The courage that is need to make these changes. I liked the questions raised by this young adult novel.
Beyond the love story, it's the fragility of the characters and their imperfections that makes this book fascinating. A fine and delicate writing that does not leave indifferent. Easy to read, I recommand this first volume . The ending written by Simon Elkeles makes me want to know more ...
I will read "Return to Paradise" with great expectations. Can't wait!

LEAVING PARADISE
BY SIMONE ELKELES

  1. Leaving Paradise sounds good. I want to really read this looks like an intense read. Return to Paradise also seems like redemption to the two protagonists. Thanks for reviewing this.
