HEART OF THE HUNTER BY LINDA ANNE WULF

Synopsis
Eight years ago, Fianna Morgan defied royal forest law and her father by entering Dinsmore Wood - and then ran for her life after witnessing a crime. Since that day, she has kept a hopeful eye out for the young man who saved her life, swore her to secrecy, and disappeared into the forest.

Now nineteen, Fianna is burned out of her tenant home and forced to serve Lord Graham at Dinsmore Hall - where she recognizes his son, Gareth, as her rescuer from Dinsmore Wood. Yet Gareth claims he has never met Fianna. Confusing her even more, he seems concerned for her safety, but acts rude and distant; nothing like her caring rescuer of eight years ago. Determined to make Gareth acknowledge their past connection, Fianna corners him - and gets far more than she bargained for.

Summary:
By venturing alone into the forest, Fianna knew she disobeyed the orders of her parents and the lord. What she did not know is that her life would be changed forever.
First, she becomes an embarrassing witness of a crime and finds herself pursued by the murderer. Then when she fears to be catched up, a young boy saves her life.
8 years later, the same boy offers her a roof in his house when hers has just burned. But by saving her life again, Gareth place her also into the lion's mouth ...

Reactions:
The reader is immersed in the English countryside of 18th century, with its edicts forbidding farmers to venture into the forest without their lord's permission. At that period, if a peasant were caught disobeying, they would incur significant penalties or death for violating the orders of their Lord even if it was to avoid starvation. It is within this context that the reader finds himself traveling into the forbidden forest alongside Fianna.
A little girl of 11 years old a little, too curious, who will be the unfortunate witness to a crime. Surprised by the guilty criminal, she ran away without having actually seen his face. Along the way, as she begins to lose hope, she is rescued by a teenager, who also has witnessed the same macabre scene.

A few years later, a combination of circumstances forced them to reunite to expose the big bad wolf. And throughout the novel, the reader expects to cross paths with the terrible monster. Every men can become a plausible suspect.

Skillfully, the author plays with our expectations and anticipations. A piece of tail here, an imprint there or some others indices that always appear when you least expect them. So, be prepared to jump and be stricken with fear!

As in parallel, the reader is embedded into the vortex of the manor daily life with these unique, fun or terrifying characters. It's so easy to forget to focus on the big bad wolf when you are too busy discovering the sheepfold. How to resist to the terrible housekeeper without tongue, the stablemaster acting as doctor, to the alcoholic lord or to succomb to the malice of the three brothers ...
Besides the permanent residents, some hosts as the widow portrayed as a praying mantis or the lovesick beau are incredible.

Obviously, this is on the duo Gareth / Fianna that the focus is most often put as tensions are numerous between them. They hate as much as they desire each other even if they try to fight their attraction. The author plays with the impatience of the reader by adding numerous obstacles to the happiness of the two heroes. Nothing is easy.
Hardly, the reader thinks he hit the nail on the outcome that a new twist in the love story appears unless it's a new dead corps .

A novel full of rythm and new developments that the reader has no time to see the lengths of it as he is so deftly taken through the pen of Linda Ann Wulf. Even the language used immerse yourself back in time and in an exciting story.
Anticipation, suspense, romance, all combine to make you spend a wonderful time.

HEART OF THE HUNTER
BY LINDA ANNE WULF
