FIX BY FORCE BY JASON WARNE

Synopsis
Spencer doesn't have a choice. He can't choose to be different than what he is--the son of the town's worst enemy, the weakling who can't stand up for himself, the loser without friends. He can't change the way things are. Or maybe he can.
Immediate confidence. Rapid change. Instant hope. These are the things Spencer believes he needs to fix his life, and that is what the steroids promise--a quick fix. But promises can be broken and shortcuts are often treacherous, and Spencer must decide if those risks are worth the perceived rewards--if "artificial" hope is strong enough for him to be fixed, by force.

Summary:
Spencer has a frail physique. He is also bullied by one of his classmates because of errors caused by his father. His mother is a drogue user out of her mind most of the time. So after a missteps, he finds himself in a school for delinquents. From there, he thinks using steroids is the solution to his problems. Are the risks really worth the effort?

Reactions
:
Sitting in front of my computer to write my review, I'm pretty embarrassed by the prospect of laying my thoughts on paper. I'm confused!

My reading was laborious even if the book is well written. The subject of steroids was interesting, pretty unusual in a book for young adult but yet the script and the plot disappointed me. But the ending is incredible, imaginatif and suprising...

At the beginning, the synopsis caught my eye. I thought that a subject of a young guy using steroids, to change his body and offer himsel a different life, could be an interesting topic for a novel. I liked the originality and so I started it pretty enthusiastically.

I fell into a first part that tells the somewhat murky circumstances of Spencer's life. His father was a drug addict who caused a car accident which killed the other driver in the crash. Bad luck for Spencer, the woman killed was also the mother of one of his buddies.

Since that day, he suffered the wrath of Zack who was violently harassing him at school. His mother is unable to properly take care of her son and rejects the anger she feels for her late husband on him. In short, he is not living a easy life but don't have all the cards of the game. This part here, even if the revelations are linked to the past of the young man, struck me as long. I wanted to shake Spencer to make him react instead of undergoing his life.

After the exclusion from his highschool, the change of scenery and new characters have given punch to my reading. Not for long! Spencer tries to become someone he is not and my attention tuned out again.
I have to motivate myself to finish the last pages, not because it is not interesting but because I was wondering how far would the main character have to drop down to learn his lesson.

I keep feeling that the author wanted to portray a young man desperate to get out and change his life and who made bad choices to get there. But I would not have needed to see a dying dog to understand that …

Then, everything changed again with new revelations and an incredible ending. Spencer is tortured, as are all the characters we meet.

In short, I was happy to go through this quite unique book. A story to read with an open mind.

FIX BY FORCE BY JASON WARNE
