HAPPY! BY GRANT MORRISON

Artist: Darick Robertson

Synopsis
Meet Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hit-man, adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex, eczema, and betrayal.

With a hit gone wrong, a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail, and a monstrous child killer in a Santa suit on the loose, Nick and his world will be changed forever this Christmas.

By a tiny blue horse called Happy!

Collects issues #1-4 of the mini-series.

Reactions
A puzzling comics.

Nick Sax went from cop to killer for hire. This idea rather interested me.
Only by advancing I realize that Nick is completely wasted. He's high and goes on illicit substances and booze all day. He lost the will to live and sinks completely in a "I don't give a f..." attitude. Nothing seems to reach him anymore.

An anti-hero, cynical, rude, ready to murder for which I struggled to sympathize.
Certainly, in this trashy Christmas Carol, Nick manages to make the right choice, in the end, and save the lives of children. Yet, his life is so embedded in a downward spiral, with the mafia, the cops in his tow and all the blood on his hands, that Nick is not a model to follow. It's just a loser.

Then there's Happy, a kind of consciousness or hallucination shaped into a blue horse. A bit out of place, he brings light and color in this very dark and depressing comics.

Knowing that Grant Morrison is regarded as the most creative artist in the world of comics, I was disappointed with his script.

Too many "Fuck" declined in empty dialogues.
The details on Nick's past arrive late and I found the story lacked of binder.

On the other hand, the drawings are gory but well done. With realistic details that catch the eye.

Although sometimes too trashy. Glanders on the cheek, the woman who fainted in the train with some pee or Santa Claus is making himself a fix in his budgie smugglers... Too much for my taste this morniong, especially before drinking my coffee.

A comic for adults.

TRACERS VOL 7

Synopsis
The seventh thrilling novel in the Tracers series from an author who “excels at detailing the mystery and the chase” (Publishers Weekly) features a forensic photographer and an FBI agent who form an uneasy partnership to find a vicious criminal. With the click of her camera, Maddie Callahan inadvertently added herself to the hit list of a criminal mastermind the FBI’s been investigating for months. Agent Brian Beckmann is determined to protect the sexy photographer, but she may be his only lead.

As a forensic photographer, Maddie is used to seeing violence up close, but she’s never before been a target. When a freelance photo shoot goes awry, she realizes she may have seen, and perhaps photographed, the kidnapping of a key witness in a federal probe. And although her camera was stolen, Maddie has something that could be even more valuable to investigators. With the help of her colleagues at the Tracers crime lab, Maddie uncovers DNA evidence that provides a desperately needed break in the case.

Although Brian is reluctant to involve Maddie, she’s determined to help with the investigation and the two set out to track a vicious criminal known as The Doctor, whose far-reaching violence has led to multiple deaths. But as the task force gets closer to catching the deadly Doctor, Maddie is in more danger than ever...

Reactions
It was the first time I read romantic suspense novel written by Laura Griffin. I really have a great time!
The synopsis drew me and I wanted a good police investigation. As I'm a fan of CSI, this story was very much appreciated.

The advantage is that this series is composed of independent stories with forensic background, but not having read the previous volumes has absolutely not disturbed me. The contrary, it has given me want to read other stories from the same author.
A interesting discovery.

Maddie, a professional photographer who works on crime scenes, becomes an embarrassing witness in a case of kidnapping. This case evolves from abduction to a drug trafficking and intensifies to murders. A complex spider web full of ugly, bloody events. In parallel to the main case, the reader follows as in a treasure hunt others crimes or accidents for which Maddie expertise is needed.

Very well written, I felt like being a little mouse on Maddie's shoulder while she was participating in the investigation.

Moreover, there's this gorgeous, cocky FBI agent, Brian, whose eagerness to seduce Maddie will complicate matters a little this realistic romance.
But thanks god, he's here because, for my taste, maybe there a little too much emotional baggage in Maddie's life. She made me want to book her for a therapy appointment to overcame her personal issues. Her way of coping is not healthy.
I prefer her professional attitude and curiosity.

In short, I loved being immersed in the world skillfully portrayed by Laura Griffin. The outcome was very realistic in action and emotions.

Sentences

From Maddie: "The victime died once, but the crime scene could be murdered a thousand times."

From Tracy: "Beer before liquor, never been sicker."

TRACERS VOL 7

IN THE SHADOWS OF GLORY... MY NBA LIFE BY M.S. LILY STARGAZER

Synopsis
If you watch certain reality shows, you might think you know all about the private lives of professional athletes and the women with whom these celebrities are involved. The women often are portrayed as shallow or demoralizing causers of drama.

Now, author M. S. Lily Stargazer is here to tell you otherwise. Lily met Clay in college and went on to travel the world with him as he excelled in his sport. She experienced it all-the fast life, the fame, and the money-but unlike so many others who were dazzled by the glittering world of professional sports, she managed to stay grounded.

In the Shadows of Glory ... My NBA Life offers an in-depth, poignant account of living day to day with an NBA player-in fact, living with the NBA itself-from the perspective of "a girl who enjoyed life and fell in love with an athlete, a basketball player."

Reactions
Assuming the author wanted to reveal the true life of an elite athletes girlfriend and not a romanticized scenario seeking to sensationalism like a reality TV Show, I've been tempted.

The outcome is quite disproportionate. There are good chapters and other slow and tedious. And I must confess that, sometimes, I got bored.

Certainly, the author wanted to portray with sincerity the moods, the people encountered and the changes that come with the life in the shadow of a basketball player in the NBA. But I thought the narrative has turned full circle.

What appealed to me at the start: the classification of women in some pretty good detailed categories has been used and abused too many times, with different words or different topics... Its has quickly lost its freshness and interest.

As an author's deliberate choice, she wanted to portray, ten years of life under the spotlight, in a fairly simple way. But her retreat way of telling the story was too clinical. It lacked emotion. Trying too hard to step back and have a neutral look, it has lost interest and power. It has become a smooth and monotonous story missing sparks of life.

It is always difficult to give an opinion on someone else life... That's why I cringed on the devaluation, submission and infidelity described as acceptable for someone in love.
I would hold two things: money, fame does not prevent problems. If you want to live with a star you need to be pretty determined to share the life of a someone living in and for his dream.

IN THE SHADOWS OF GLORY...
MY NBA LIFE
BY M.S. LILY STARGAZER

In the Shadows of Glory ...

THE PRELUDE BY KASONNDRA LEIGH

A MUSICAL INTERLUDE VOL 1

Synopsis
A New Adult Contemporary Romance

After finishing design school six months ago, Erin Angelo left her tragic past behind in the States and started a new life in Milan, Italy. Burying the grief, silencing her demons, and living a life without any real attachments has worked well for her so far. But when Erin secures her first real job as a budding clothing designer, her controlled world is shaken to its core by the mysteriously sexy director of the local symphony.

Alek Dostov is a man who knows what he wants and how to get it. He’s successful, hot, the son of a millionaire, and women all over the world flock to see one of his performances.
For Alek, Erin represents the ultimate challenge: sexy, smart, and unaffected by his charms…or so she thinks. Just like Erin, Alek avoids attachments that leave him emotionally vulnerable. But unlike Erin, his pursuit of all things pleasurable is ruthless.

Knowing how wary they both are concerning any kind of committed relationship, Alek finds a way to pursue Erin, satisfying the intense attraction between them without sacrificing the freedom they both enjoy. Sometimes the deepest passion brings out the darkest emotions. And Erin finds herself completely unprepared for the forbidden world of the young maestro and his truths and even his secrets, as she struggles to deal with her own.

Reactions
Music, fashion, dance and romance: a great receipe

In the world of art and fashion, two people who have nothing in commun, even their culture, will find themselves bound by a strange quirk of fate.

Erin has a fairly, heavy, painful past since she lost her sister and father in a car accident, when she was a teenager. The day of the funeral, she also lost her first love. Since then, she has vowed never to fall for someone again.
As an adult, Erin became a talented designer in Milan. Her first big contract consist in creating costumes for a ballet and a concert: Requiem for a Dream.

In addition to the pressure of her first enormous professional task, she must deal with the talented, gorgeous maestro from Russia: Alek. An arrogant playboy, used to getting what he wants, while keeping people at arm's length.

An unusual passion will bind them around music and dance. They will learn to trust and open up to each other on a background of mafia plot, blood feud, lies and threats of any kind.

Well written, lively and touching, this contemporary romance has a touch of suspense and anxiety that adds excitement to the story. The ending is full of twists and turns that are predictable but still great to read.

Kasonndra Leigh offers a compelling romance with interesting main and secondary characters.

What also interested me was that the author creates a Pinterest page with music, images to support her text and bring the reader into her world and her inspiration.

Sentences

From Erin: "Love I have this to say to you: "You tore open my heart. You made me feel pain when all I wanted to feel was joy. So now, I will remove your power over me. I'll never kiss anyone or trust in any dream that you can take away from me. I will never believe in you, ever again."

From Alek: "But getting another chance to make something right in life after you've tried, and still done it wrong so many times before, now that kind of thing only happens for a few of us."

From Alek: "Kill me for saying this, but I was thinking we were moving beyond the dog chasing the pussy cat game."

THE PRELUDE BY KASONNDRA LEIGH
A MUSICAL INTERLUDE VOL 1
